Difference Between Carbon Steel and Cast Iron

The fundamental difference between cast iron and carbon steel is the carbon content. The carbon content above 2.08% (some with 2.11% boundary) is iron, and the following is steel. However, in practical applications, generally, those with a carbon content of less than 0.03% are called wrought iron or pure iron, and those with a carbon content of 0.1-1.7% are called steel. Cast iron and carbon steel are both iron-carbon alloys.

The carbon content of cast iron is high, the carbon content is more than 2%, and the carbon content of industrial cast iron is generally 2.5%-3.5%. Carbon steel has a low carbon content. Carbon steel has low strength and hardness, good plasticity and toughness. The performance of cast iron varies greatly due to different types, some are very brittle and have low use value (such as white cast iron), and some have very good performance, which is similar to quenched and tempered steel (such as ductile iron).
